What Is Universal Health Care and is it available in Belize?

Universal health care is a health care system that provides health care and financial protection to all citizens of a country.

what is universal health care

It is organized around providing a specified package of benefits to all members of that country with the goal of providing financial risk protection, improved access to health services, and improved health outcomes.

Though Belize cannot be considered as one of the universal health care countries, it does offer a national public health care system, and legal residents has access to it.

You will have access to the services and care offered by public hospitals. The United States government, via the U.S. Southern Command and U.S. Army South under the "Beyond The Horizon" initiative, just upgraded the Western Regional Hospital, which is located just 15 minutes away in the Capital City of Belmopan.

These upgrades includes:

  • Expansion of the emergency room.

  • Construction of a new medical waste incinerator housing.

Though small in numbers, private health care in Belize offers relatively low cost, quality services.

It is recommended that you purchase private health insurance so that you can be treated at these private health care services. The cost of your policy will depend on whether you also opt for international and/or U.S. coverage.

If you have a major health issue that cannot be addressed in Belize, you can easily get to nearby Chetumal or Mérida in Mexico.
